    Use of remote sensing data for broad acre grain crop monitoring in Southeast Australia

    In 2025, there will be almost 8 billion people to feed as the worlds population rapidly increases. To meet domestic and export demands, Australian grain productivity needs to approximately triple in the next 20 years, and this production needs to occur in an environmentally sustainable manner. The advent of Hi-tech Precision Farming in Australia has shown promise in recent time to optimize the use of resources. Most "precision farmers" produce yield maps at harvest. However when yield maps become available it is usually too late to apply management techniques that would address problems in the crop specific to the current season. A satellite-based broad-acre crop monitoring system could provide intelligence on crop performance throughout the growing season. A prototype concept for a system that used commercially available satellite imagery was developed in this research, named ALMIS (Agricultural Land Management Information System) and tested with 25 farmers in the Gooroc area in Victoria with a focus on the following crop types; barley, canola, chickpeas, lentils and wheat. Through the study, several components providing vital information for a crop monitoring system were developed from satellite imagery, including crop type discrimination, quantitative crop parameters, crop yield estimates. Furthermore, critical parameters for the system were determined. The feedback given by the Gooroc farmers, together with the results gained from the ALMIS field studies and considerations reported in the literature were the foundations for the concept design proposal. As critical parameters were identified (amongst others): delivery of data within 1-2 days after acquisition; data should have spatial resolution better than 10 meters, and appropriate geometric and radiometric stability; in an easy-to-use computer interface (software or via internet), carefully timed image data should be offered as near infrared imagery, colour-coded vegetation index, percentile rating for each paddock, quantitative vegetation parameter and yield forecast maps; assistance should to be given to farmers by trained agronomists to convert information into management decisions, and training courses are needed to give end users basic understanding of the technologies utilized by such a system; consolidated strategic development efforts need to be employed to further the use of the information in decision support systems and variable rate technology. As the technology is in its infancy it needs to be supported by government and industry initiatives to reach critical mass. It was concluded that information from satellite remote sensing is greatly beneficial to the farming community of south east Australia, resulting in substantial economic benefits for local farmers as it becomes widely adapted. The technology developed in this thesis contributes to the Australian goal of increasing crop yields in a profitable and environmentally friendly manner

    Authentication of cow feeding and geographic origin on milk using visible and near-infrared spectroscopy.

    International audience; The ability of near-infrared spectroscopy to trace cow feeding systems and farming altitude was tested on 486 bulk milk samples from France and northwestern Italy. Milks were grouped into feeding systems according to the main forage in the diet. Partial least square discriminant analysis correctly classified 95.5, 91.5, and 93.3% of pasture versus maize silage, hay, and fermented herbage feeding systems, respectively. Discrimination was slightly less successful when diets with large proportions of the nondominant forage were included in each group. Near-infrared spectroscopy correctly discriminated no-pasture from pasture milk, even with only 30% of pasture in the diet (5.4% cross-validation error), and the error stabilized when pasture exceeded 70% (2.5% error). Near-infrared spectroscopy did not reliably trace milk geographic origin when the feeding system effect was isolated from the altitude effect. These findings may be usefully exploited for the authentication of dairy products

    Automatic Performance Testing using Input-Sensitive Profiling

    During performance testing, software engineers commonly perform application profiling to analyze an application\u27s traces with different inputs to understand performance behaviors, such as time and space consumption. However, a non-trivial application commonly has a large number of inputs, and it is mostly manual to identify the specific inputs leading to performance bottlenecks. Thus, it is challenge is to automate profiling and find these specific inputs. To solve these problems, we propose novel approaches, FOREPOST, GA-Prof and PerfImpact, which automatically profile applications for finding the specific combinations of inputs triggering performance bottlenecks, and further analyze the corresponding traces to identify problematic methods. Specially, our approaches work in two different types of real-world scenarios of performance testing: i) a single-version scenario, in which performance bottlenecks are detected in a single software release, and ii) a two-version scenario, in which code changes responsible for performance regressions are detected by considering two consecutive software releases

    Road Infrastructure Safety Management. Proactive Safety Tools to Evaluate Potential Conditions of Risk

    The identification of highly critical sections in a road network is possible by examining the network operation, with the goal of determining the risk factors and observe the critical issues, in order to better plan possible improvements. Therefore, this study proposes a method to evaluate the coherence of existing road layouts, through the analysis of the geometric characteristics, theoretical speeds and drivers operating speeds, under different environmental and flow conditions. The analysis focuses on the road network managed by ANAS SpA in the Veneto Region, for which the reconstruction of the road axes geometry, the curvature graph and the theoretical design speed profile have been obtained, according to the indications of the Italian Ministerial Decree 05/11/2001. The theoretical design speed profile has then been compared with the information relating to the road users' mobility, in terms of the 85th percentile speeds, obtained from the extraction and analysis of the Floating Car Data (FCD). The data were processed by reconstructing the continuous profile of operating speeds with a specific regression function known as "smoothing cubic spline". The comparison with the theoretical design speeds allows to observe whether the users assume a behavior close to or distant from what is expected, based on the technical and geometrical characteristics of the road layout. The proposed methodology can contribute to the implementation of a proactive road safety check, aimed at recognizing and assessing the potential risk conditions for road traffic, with particular attention to the point of view of the road user

    One goal of performance testing is to find specific test input data for exposing performance bottlenecks and identify the methods responsible for these performance bottlenecks. A big and important challenges of performance testing is how to deeply understand the performance behaviors of a non-trivial software system in terms of test input data to properly select the specific test input values for finding the problematic methods. Thus, we propose this research program to automatically analyze performance behaviors in software and link these behaviors with test input data for selecting the specific ones that can expose performance bottlenecks. In addition, this research further examines the corresponding execution traces of selected inputs for targeting the problematic methods

    All-optical trapping and acceleration of heavy particles

    A scheme for fast, compact, and controllable acceleration of heavy particles in vacuum is proposed, in which two counterpropagating lasers with variable frequencies drive a beat-wave structure with variable phase velocity, thus allowing for trapping and acceleration of heavy particles, such as ions or muons. Fine control over the energy distribution and the total charge of the beam is obtained via tuning of the frequency variation. The acceleration scheme is described with a one-dimensional theory, providing the general conditions for trapping and scaling laws for the relevant features of the particle beam. Two-dimensional, electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations confirm the validity and the robustness of the physical mechanism.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to appear in New Journal of Physic

    Plasmatic and urinary glycosaminoglycans characterization in mucopolysaccharidosis II Patient treated with enzyme-replacement therapy with Idursulfase

    We report the structural characterization of plasmatic and urinary GAGs in a Patient affected by MPS II (Hunter syndrome) before and during the first ten months of enzyme-replacement therapy (ERT). Plasmatic GAGs before ERT were rich in pathological DS consisting of iduronic acid (IdoA) and composed of ~90% \uf044Di4s and trace amounts of disulfated disaccharides. DS was also characterized as the main (~90%) urinary GAG mainly composed of ~90% \uf044Di4s with minor percentages of monosulfated and disulfated disaccharides, in particular \u394Di2,4dis. After 300 days of ERT, plasmatic DS strongly decreased but ~14% of IdoA-rich \uf044Di4s was still detected. Similarly, urinary galactosaminoglycans were mainly composed of 78% \uf044Di4s, ~11% \uf044Di6s and ~4% \uf044Di0s with the persistence of \u394Di2,4dis (~4%). About 40% of IdoA-formed \uf044Di4s were also calculated thus confirming that pathological DS is still present in excreted urinary GAGs during ERT. By considering the % of IdoA, we observed rather similar kinetics of excretion in fluids from the beginning of the treatment. Immediately after the first enzyme infusion, a large amount of abnormal DS is removed from tissues reaching the blood compartment and eliminated via the urine, and this process lasts for about two weeks. After this, the percentage of IdoA-rich material present in biological fluids remains fairly constant over the following nine months of treatment. To date, these are the first data regarding plasmatic and urinary kinetics directly measured on products released by the activity of the recombinant enzyme Idursulfase, iduronate-2-sulfatase, evaluated using specific and sensitive analytical procedures

    Expansion of nanoplasmas and laser-driven nuclear fusion in single exploding clusters

    The expansion of laser-irradiated clusters or nanodroplets depends strongly on the amount of energy delivered to the electrons and can be controlled by using appropriately shaped laser pulses. In this paper, a self-consistent kinetic model is used to analyze the transition from quasineutral, hydrodinamic-like expansion regimes to the Coulomb explosion (CE) regime when increasing the ratio between the thermal energy of the electrons and the electrostatic energy stored in the cluster. It is shown that a suitable double-pump irradiation scheme can produce hybrid expansion regimes, wherein a slow hydrodynamic expansion is followed by a fast CE, leading to ion overtaking and producing multiple ion flows expanding with different velocities. This can be exploited to obtain intracluster fusion reactions in both homonuclear deuterium clusters and heteronuclear deuterium-tritium clusters, as also proved by three-dimensional molecular-dynamics simulations.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusio

    PDR-1/hParkin negatively regulates the phagocytosis of apoptotic cell corpses in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Apoptotic cell death is an integral part of cell turnover in many tissues, and proper corpse clearance is vital to maintaining tissue homeostasis in all multicellular organisms. Even in tissues with high cellular turnover, apoptotic cells are rarely seen because of efficient clearance mechanisms in healthy individuals. In Caenorhabditis elegans, two parallel and partly redundant conserved pathways act in cell corpse engulfment. The pathway for cytoskeletal rearrangement requires the small GTPase CED-10 Rac1 acting for an efficient surround of the dead cell. The CED-10 Rac pathway is also required for the proper migration of the distal tip cells (DTCs) during the development of the C. elegans gonad. Parkin, the mammalian homolog of the C. elegans PDR-1, interacts with Rac1 in aged human brain and it is also implicated with actin dynamics and cytoskeletal rearrangements in Parkinsons's disease, suggesting that it might act on engulfment. Our genetic and biochemical studies indicate that PDR-1 inhibits apoptotic cell engulfment and DTC migration by ubiquitylating CED-10 for degradation
